Instead of New Year’s Resolutions
January 1, 2012
New Years’ Resolutions work! ... Alas, for most of us, for a few weeks only.
After the initial energy disappears and we fail, an even deeper sadness follows.
There are plenty of explanations for this phenomenon.
Yes, the energizing season of spring might be a better time to change your life. Yes, following written goals and rewarding yourself gives a better chance to succeed. Yes, there are some great and proven tools to reach your goals!
So, why do we fail?
If you think about it, being willing to change suggests that your present situation is not good enough – that is, you wish things would change for the better.
You would like to look leaner, be healthier, have a better salary, and spend more time with your family.
This present situation is basically the result of your past. You did or did not do something earlier – now you feel bad about it and want to change.
You might have skipped going to the gym, you might have overeaten – and now you’re sad to be overweight. Your financial decisions were probably not “good” enough – you want to have more money. You feel bad for having worsened your health with a nasty habit, or feel unhappy to be away from your family.
Now all the consequences are here, and you do not like them.
This unpleasant feeling is full of bad consciousness. You might even feel like a sinner, even if you “erred” against yourself.
Would it not be better to get rid of that guilt and remorse? Would it not be more logical to clean that slate at least partly before writing anything new on it?
Doing this does not mean that you have to “work” only on your past and then “just be in the present” without any targets or even “New Year’s resolutions.”
Sinburning approaches your true and positive goals with great sympathy and care. Having these goals means that you see your path, wish to develop your self, and know how to grow as a person.
Admitting your past mistakes, “burning” them, and moving on simply means that you are starting out on your new quest feeling happier, being in the present and full of new energy!
This way, you have a real chance to achieve your goals or fulfill your “New Year’s resolutions” – even if you decide on them on any of the remaining 364 days of the year. Or if you call them differently, like: the next steps on your spiritual journey.
